Take a look at some of my zenpack on github (like zenHttpComponent), these should have some examples that you can use. If i recall the key to the menu item is having the correct javascript coded and an entry for it in configure.zcml. Also, the javascript calls methods defined in the facades.py, routers.py, etc...
